Majesty of Diwani: Episode 2 Demystifying the Fundamentals of Diwani

Welcome Back, UAC Calligraphers!

In our first episode, we delved into the captivating history and alluring complexity of Diwani script. Now, it's time to roll up your sleeves and begin the exciting journey of mastering its fundamentals!

Equipping Yourself for Ottoman Elegance:

Before we embark on this artistic pursuit, let's ensure you have the necessary tools:

  • Qalam (Pen): Unlike some Arabic scripts, Diwani requires a specialized qalam with a slightly angled tip. UAC resources can guide you on selecting and preparing the perfect Diwani qalam.
  • Ink: Opt for high-quality black ink suitable for Arabic calligraphy. Consider using thicker consistency ink to achieve the bold strokes characteristic of Diwani.
  • Paper: Choose smooth, high-quality paper that can handle the rich ink and intricate strokes of Diwani without bleeding. UAC might recommend specific paper types ideal for this script.
Posture and Control for Precision:

Maintaining proper posture and grip is paramount for creating the precise and controlled strokes essential for Diwani. Here's a guide:

  • Posture: Sit upright with your back straight and feet firmly planted on the ground. Ensure you have ample arm and hand movement for creating the elongated forms of Diwani letters.
  • Grip: Hold the qalam at a steeper angle compared to other Arabic scripts, around 75 degrees. This angle allows for better control over the delicate strokes and flourishes.
The Building Blocks of Diwani:

Diwani, like any other script, is built upon a core set of strokes. This episode will focus on mastering these fundamentals:

  • Al-Qaim (The Upright): While similar to other scripts, Diwani's upright strokes are often emphasized with a slight curve at the bottom for a more dynamic feel.
  • Al-Madd (The Elongation): Mastering the art of elongation is crucial for Diwani. Practice creating long, controlled strokes for the ascenders and descenders that define this script.
  • Al-Mansub (The Connected): Diwani letters often seamlessly connect with elaborate flourishes. Practice creating smooth transitions between strokes, focusing on precision and maintaining the overall flow.
Practice Makes Progress:

Now comes the exciting part – practicing these strokes! Here are some tips:

  • Start Slow and Deliberate: Don't rush! Focus on slow, controlled movements with the qalam, ensuring accuracy and proper form in each stroke.
  • Visualize the Path: Before creating a stroke, visualize its complete path in your mind. This mental rehearsal helps guide your hand for a smooth and confident execution.
  • Utilize UAC Resources: UAC might offer downloadable Diwani stroke practice sheets. Utilize these resources to refine your technique and gain muscle memory for the essential strokes.
Moving on to Diwani Letters:

Once you've mastered the basic strokes, we'll progress to forming individual Diwani letters. The upcoming episode will break down the letter shapes, focusing on their unique proportions, intricate connections, and the art of incorporating essential flourishes.
