Ijaza

The Art of Certification in Arabic Calligraphy

Since the first century AH, the Ijaza has stood as the covenant of calligraphic trust — an educational system linking the learner to authenticated chains of transmission spanning generations. Today, the Arabic Calligraphy University (UAC) renews this legacy with rigorous geometric standards and global digital verification.

 What is the Ijaza?

Ijaza — Engineering Trust Across Generations

Ijaza — Engineering Trust Across Generations

The Ijaza is a high-level artistic competency document granted by a certified master teacher to a student, acknowledging mastery of Arabic calligraphy according to documented geometric standards and an unbroken chain of transmission tracing back to the founding imams of the craft.

The Ijaza is not an honorary badge granted by courtesy — it is a competency certificate built through sweat, repetition, and deep geometric comprehension. Every Ijaza carries an authenticated chain of transmission linking it to the founding masters through an unbroken academic lineage.

"Calligraphy is spiritual geometry manifested through a physical instrument." — Ibn Muqlah (328 AH)

Artistic Integrity

Assessment is based purely on geometric measurements — free from emotional judgment or personal impression.

Academic Fidelity

The connected Isnad ensures every Ijaza is linked to a continuous academic chain tracing back to the founding calligraphic imams.

Digital Governance

Every Ijaza is linked to a QR code registered in the central database — full transparency and anti-forgery protection.

 Academic Roots

1,400 Years of Calligraphic Ijaza

From the first moment of revelation to the digital evaluation matrix — a continuous journey across generations

1st Century AH
7th CE

The Ijaza in Prophetic Hadith — The First Root

Before calligraphy became an academic art, the Ijaza was a well-established Islamic scholarly system in the science of Hadith. A master would grant his student an Ijaza to transmit what he learned — the same principle calligraphers later built their Isnad system on: "Do not teach what you have not received."

3rd Century AH
9th CE

Calligraphers' Guilds in Baghdad

Under the Abbasid Caliphate, calligraphers' guilds formed in Baghdad as regulatory bodies granting work permits and preserving craft standards — the first institutional model for calligraphic accreditation programs.

328 AH
Ibn Muqlah — Founder of Proportional Script

He established the first geometric principles through the Standard Dot System, tying letter proportions to the circle and alef. His maxim: "Calligraphy is spiritual geometry" remains the cornerstone of every calligraphy academy today.

413 AH
Ibn Al-Bawwab — Pioneer of Written Ijaza

He developed Ibn Muqlah's methodology and granted students a written Ijaza in his own hand authorising them to teach and transmit calligraphy — the first known documented granting of an Ijaza in calligraphic history.

698 AH
Yaqut Al-Musta'simi — Master of the Six Script

He completed the geometric framework for the Six Scripts and tied the Ijaza document to a connected chain of transmission leading back to him — the highest authenticated chain in Arabic calligraphic history to this day.

1973 CE
Hashim Al-Baghdadi — Codifying Modern Standards

He established the first geometric principles through the Standard Dot System, tying letter proportions to the circle and alef. His maxim: "Calligraphy is spiritual geometry" remains the cornerstone of every calligraphy academy today.

Arabic Calligraphy University (UAC) — Secure Digital Ijaza

UAC completes a 1,400-year journey through the Unified Geometric Standards framework powered by digital verification. Every Ijaza is linked to an authenticated chain and a QR code registered in the central database.

Accreditation System

The Three Levels of Ijaza in UAC

Each level grants specific permissions and requires different competencies — a three-tier sequential system

Level One — Practitioner Ijaza

Practitioner Ijaza  (Foundation Level)

What It Authorises

  • Practise calligraphy and exhibit works under the title "UAC Certified Calligrapher"
  • Participate in institutional exhibitions and official calligraphy markets
  • Apply to the Level Two qualification programme

Requirements

  • Pass the Six Scripts matrix with a minimum score of 85/100
  • At least one Ijaza panel signed by a UAC certified master
  • Authenticated chain with a minimum of two links

Level Two — Teaching Ijaza

Teaching Ijaza  (Advanced Level)

What It Authorises

  • Teach calligraphy under the UAC name in accredited centres
  • Correct student work and submit official progress reports
  • Sign attendance certificates and module completion documents Requirements

Requirements

  • Hold the Practitioner Ijaza (Level One)
  • Pass the UAC Pedagogical Competency Assessment
  • Teaching portfolio with results from at least three real students

Level Three — Examiner's Ijaza

Examiner's Ijaza  (Sovereign Level)

What It Authorises

  • Conduct official Ijaza sessions and issue certificates with the UAC seal
  • Judge official calligraphy competitions
  • Supervise the granting of Level One and Level Two in UAC centres Requirements

Requirements

  • Hold the Teaching Ijaza for no less than 3 years
  • Authenticated chain with three or more connected links
  • Endorsement from two Level Three certified examiners

 Restricted Ijaza

Authorises the holder to transmit a specific art or a single defined script only. Granting is contingent on mastery of one type with an authenticated connected chain — established by Ibn Al-Bawwab (413 AH).

 Unrestricted Ijaza

Authorises the holder to transmit all scripts. Requires documented mastery of all six scripts and a chain of three or more links — established by Yaqut Al-Musta'simi (698 AH).

 Calligraphic Trust

The Isnad Chain — Chain of Authority

The Isnad is the connected chain of teachers and learners that transmits Arabic calligraphy from generation to generation in a documented, unbroken manner. It is not merely a genealogical tree — it is the original quality guarantee linking every calligrapher today to the founding masters.

Core Principle: No one may grant an Ijaza in a script they have not personally received from a certified master. The Isnad defines the scope of authority, not the level of mastery alone.

UAC Rule: No Ijaza is granted without an authenticated chain of at least three connected links, in addition to passing the UAC Certified Geometric Assessment.

CACAP Programme & Ijaza — A Partnership of Standards

The classical Ijaza system enhanced with modern geometric standards from the Arabic Calligraphy Adjudication Certification Programme

Classical Ijaza

Authenticated chain of transmission • Personal scholarly covenant • Authentic Islamic educational heritage

The Integrated UAC System

Historical Isnad + Geometric Standards + Digital Verification = The Modern Academic Ijaza

CACAP Geometric Standards

Standard measurement point • Precise letter proportions • Unified evaluation matrix

The CACAP programme (Arabic Calligraphy Adjudication Certification Programme) was born to qualify judges at calligraphy competitions — not as a constraint on creativity, but as a framework that liberates it from reliance on personal judgment. From those same geometric standards, the digital Ijaza system was derived.

Density: High
 Level One

The most widely used script in Qurans and print media — distinguished by its clarity and the precision of its geometric rules.

Nastaliq
Density: Medium
 Level One

The elegant Persian script — distinguished by the inclined angle of words and fluid writing motion, prevalent in poetry and literature.

Diwani
Density: Very Advanced
