The Tools of the Trade:

Before we begin, ensure you have the essential tools for Thuluth calligraphy:

• Qalam (Pen): A traditional reed pen with a carefully prepared tip is ideal. UAC resources can guide you on selecting and preparing your qalam.
• Ink: Opt for high-quality black ink suitable for Arabic calligraphy.
• Paper: Use smooth, absorbent paper that can handle bold strokes without bleeding.

Posture and Grip:

For optimal control, maintain good posture while holding the qalam comfortably between your thumb, index, and middle finger. The qalam should rest on the side of your ring finger for stability.

Essential Strokes:

Thuluth script utilizes a core set of strokes. This episode will focus on the most fundamental ones:

• Al-Qaim (The Upright): A straight vertical stroke forming the backbone of many letters.
• Al-Afs (The Horizontal): A straight horizontal stroke used for letter connections and diacritics.
